Changes of end-tidal CO_2 after induction of general anesthesia and ventilator setting

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out adequate time measuring patient¡¯s arterial carbon dioxide tension(PaCO_2) after induction of general anesthesia and ventilator setting. Because monitoring of end-tidal carbon dioxide tension(ETCO_2) is noninvasive and continuous method and ETCO_2 is significantly correlated with PaCO_2, the authors measured end-tidal carbon dioxide tension at mask ventilation and 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 minutes after induction of general anesthesia and ventilator setting in thirty patients who have no respiratory and cardiovascular disease. ETCO_2 at 5, 10, 15 minutes after ventilator setting had significant difference(p£¼0.05) with successive time but there was no significant difference at 20 and 25 minutes with successive time. Therefore when measure PaCO_2 after induction of general anesthesia and ventilator setting, it is recommended to measure PaCO_2 after 20 minutes. But if there are some factors to influence carbon dioxide content of the body such as lung disease, use of tourniquet, changes of cardiac output and metabolic rate, it is necessary to measure PaCO_2 repeatedly.
